Beautiful preserved heart on a handmade display stand! This heart came from a pig, which is the animal that bears the closest resemblance to the human heart in size, shape, function and composition. This pig heart has been thoroughly preserved with formalin, and then was embedded with wax to complete the dry preservation process. The wax serves to help retain the shape and lipid (fat) portions of the heart to make it more anatomically correct for scientific study. This heart has also been sectioned into three pieces so that the internal structures (chambers, valves, vessels, etc.) can be seen and examined.
